THURS. 10/29 SOUTH IHS AND FRI. 10/30 SHELDON IHS (Early Release at Sheldon)

Collect typed sentences from vocab for "Oedipus"

Receive outline for formal "Oedipus" essay

Take objective test on the characters of "Oedipus"

Working in groups, discuss the "big questions" of Oedipus. If you missed this discussion, you can make up the credit earned by typing out responses to the questions. Get a copy of them from the homework box in the classroom and choose 3 of the questions to discuss -- one well written, thoughtful paragraph as a response to each of the 3 questions.

Receive calendar of all "Oedipus" assignments and handout with topics and expectations for a formal "Oedipus" essay

In groups, act out lines from "Oedipus"

IF YOU MISSED THIS CLASS, you can work with others who were absent and act out some lines further on in the play when you return and have a chance to practice a few lines (no need to memorize them)

At Sheldon, we also took notes on the three forms of irony -- verbal, situational, and dramatic. Get from a friend if you missed.

MONDAY 10/19 SOUTH IHS AND TUESDAY 10/20 SHELDON IHS

Toga party! Students come dressed in a toga with accessories that emphasize an assigned character from the play "Oedipus" or a Greek god/goddess.

At South, I went over the very beginning of the play and then assigned groups to act out lines next class.

At Sheldon, we're behind because of the district-wide testing day last week, so students just today received the background info on the play.

Check out "Oedipus" by Sophocles

Get vocab assignment

Background to "Oedipus" and understanding strophe/antistrophe IF YOU MISSED CLASS, YOU SHOULD RESEARCH THE BACKGROUND AND STROPE/ANTISTROPHE ON LINE AND GET AN IDEA OF WHAT'S GOING ON AS THE PLAY BEGINS.
Get assignment of a character or Greek god/goddess for our TOGA PARTY! You'll come dressed in a toga and some kind of sandals. You're welcome to wear a T-shirt and pants under the toga,but nothing bulky or distracting like a striped shirt or sweatshirt. You can google "how to make a toga" for info on creating a toga, but please don't spend money on buying new material. Use an old sheet (or buy an old one from Goodwill) that's PLAIN -- no flowers, Mickey Mouse, etc.
Be sure that your toga and the nametag you will make to attach to your toga has some kind of representation of your character/god/goddess (a fake crown, a plastic bow and arrow, etc.). YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO SPEND MONEY ON THIS OUTFIT TO DO IT WELL.

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: Bring some Greek foods for our toga party or offer to help me clean up afterwards (I only need two helpers from each class,and you must not have a class after ours in order to stay and clean). Ideas for food: Store bought dolmas, pita bread, hummus, grapes, Greek cheese, tzakziki. If money is any issue at all in getting this extra credit, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! You will not be left without extra credit simply because you couldn't afford to spend money right now. NO ONE SHOULD SPEND MORE THAN $5 ON THIS PARTY FOOD.

Whole class was spent taking the final test on "Lord of the Flies," which required 4 long paragraphs written to answer 4 discussion questions. IF YOU MISSED THIS, MAKING IT UP SOONER RATHER THAN LATER WILL BE TO YOUR BENEFIT. YOU HAVE TWO WEEKS TO MAKE IT UP -- EVEN EARLIER THAN TWO WEEKS WOULD BE GOOD FOR YOU!

HWK:
None! You have a big piece of sophomore projects due this week, so please work on that.
Wednesday 10/14 is testing (in the morning) for all 4j high school students, so no regular classes at all on that day. I'll be at Sheldon; let me know if you'd like to meet with me on Wed. afternoon for any reason.

Read the final pages of the novel and discuss irony

Take notes on Freud's model of id, ego, and superego and discuss how they apply to the novel

Take notes on Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development

To study for the final on Lord of the Flies, be sure you know the characters and major events. One good way to review would be to go through the novel chapter by chapter and be sure you know why the author titled the chapters as he did.

HWK:
Final test next class. You may use any notes we've taken in class on the novel or on grammar. Test will be paragraph responses to discussion questions.

Vocab test

Get back writing on "Peace One Day" and record comments on your tracking sheet. Both writing and tracking sheet to into the folder in the classroom.

Look at how to do in text citation when the author is included (Jones 52). Notice that there's NO COMMA between the author and the page number. This is info you'll want to know for your Great Peacemaker assignment coming due next week.

Whole class discussion on the question: Would girls on the island have signicantly affected the events in the novel?"

None! Work on your Great Peacemaker project
Be ready for a test on the whole novel on Monday (Omega) and Tuesday (Alpha) of next week

FRIDAY 10/2 SOUTH IHS AND MONDAY 10/15 SHELDON IHS

Collect the next set of 10 vocab pics

SO AM2 AND SHS, we had a quiz on the reading

SO PM, we took notes on themes of the novel

In all SO classes, we read our autobio poems

In both SO and SHS classes, we looked at page 87 of Writer's Inc. and worked on writing without comma splices from page 88. At Sheldon, students got back in class writing, recorded strengths and weaknesses, and put it in their folders.

Received THEME assignment and went over the expectations. If you missed class, you can get a hard copy of that assignment in the homework box in the classroom. If anyone knows how to make links to assignments such as this from this blog, I'd love for you to show me how!

Played a vocab acting game to practice for test next class (the picture at the top of this entry is an example of one of our vocab words. Do you know which one?
